The gearbox on my 1.3i Sidewalk makes a rattling/grinding sound when driven . It has made this noise for some time and drives fine with no problem selecting gears etc. Is my gear box knackered or could it be something else?

Without driving it and listening to it, it's hard to say.

But it could be diff problems, gearbox problems that aren't gear related or even something else?

Is the noise definitely comin from the gearbox? Does it do it more when going round corners?

Most likely to be the main bearing on it's way out if the noise is there all the time.

The noise is there mainly in first and second when driven. The noise not there when clutch is pressed or out of gear. There is no noise when in fourth.
I'm not 100% sure the noise is coming from gearbox, just put two and two together.

The noise dosen't get worse when going around corners.

If it's not there in forth, then it's likely to be the needle bearings on the layshaft or the layshaft itself, eitherway it's gearbox out... even though it still rotates when in forth, there is little to no power going through it therfore is just being turned by the box, and not under load.

either way, not something you want to go pop when you are going along.

was going to suggest you either check the sump plug or at least change the oil over to see if that makes a difference.
