Key differences include block (A+ is ribbed), dizzy drive, dizzy clamp, dizzy ( A+ dizzy is shorter )
Rods may have interference-fit gudgeon pins in later motors.
A+ pistons normally flat top, A often dished.
A+ may have timing chain tensioner, Verto clutch
Cam drive to oil pump likely to be pin in A, slot in A+ and some A dont have fule pump lobe's.
A+ more likely to have unleaded head (1988 ON FOR UNLEADED)
Different transfer gears and A+ has the dipstick slide directly into the block rather than a tube on A series engines.
Starter has the solenoild built in on A+

Just check the Clearance on the Main Bearings carefully with Plastigauge on assembly. There are some small differences between A and A+, which can be an issue.

My gearbox has the smaller dia. mainshaft which probably means it's an earler type? but I'll check the transfer gears. presumably I can fit the verto clutch, flywheel and later starter that I have? I have a big valve head which is being unleaded converted. I may need to change my pistons then.

every part is useable (dizzy drives excepted) but you need to make sure the parts are suitable.
gearboxes are not an issue (very early ones and long stroke engines excepted) drop gears are not an issue just use the right box and transfer housing. flywheel assy is not an issue just use the right slave and levers. duplex is not an issue take your pick of front plates and cases. A or A+ both fit.
pistons you can use any. but need to do what is needed for the build etc
