Anyone know how it works with an MOT exempt car and a reg transfer?

Used to be  ' have an MOT before the transfer'

No I am not separating an early reg number from a Mini,

as it has happened to me, so the car has an A at each end of the number plate, which compared to the original is lacking.

Don't you just love the interweb ... Thought this was the case ..

Vehicles which (because of their age) are MOT exempt (pre 1960), will be required by DVLA to undertake a voluntary MOT in order to qualify for transfer.

Well that's for the car the plates comming off ... Not sure about the one it's going on.

Here you go ...

Participating vehicles must be currently licensed, of a testable type, and be available for inspection. However, applications involving unlicensed donor vehicles will still be considered if the application to transfer the number is placed within FIVE years of the most recent TAX expiry date and provided there has been no change of keeper since the tax expired and SORN was declared. (Note: In order for a vehicle to qualify for the concession, there must be no break between the expiry date of the licence and the commencement of SORN. In circumstances where the vehicle has had a change of keeper, the vehicle will need to be re-taxed by the new keeper in order to qualify for transfer).

Good luck with anything to do wit the DVLA .. we have a liaison officer in one classic car club I belong to and they can even give him more than one answer to the same question .. seems to be down to luck depending on how processes you application .. although the ones with cheques enclosed do seem to have more success.

You do it all online now, no need to fill any forms or post any letters. Just the same for ownership changes, you can do it instantly and get email notifications with seconds. Paperwork comes within a few days too.

The last time I did one (roughly 6 months ago), I was told that any pre 63 cars will need an inspection.

Before you would have to present the car to a licensing office however with the amount of closures of offices, they've outsourced it to a seperate company who come and inspect the car at your address.

I also had to MOT the vehicle even though it was a 1958 and hence was MOT exempt.

Thanks for the replies, a voluntary Mot is what I thought, which is sensible on any Mot exempt car anyway.

Anyone know if the bonkers DVLA target to move the Mot exempt date forward to 1977 is going to happen in May?

As of now its the pre 1960 date, they were talking about May for a 1977, date not sure about rolling it on.

The argument was that cars later than '77 were less statistically 'safe', and there is more of them.
