Hi All

Ive got a set of deep rim JBW alloys 6x12inch in gun metal gray - the rim has become really tatty and it looks like the shiney "coating" has been eaten off the rim by road salt i would guess, its almost like a white crystal deposit has built up in patches and when i cleaned it off the factory surface went with it - i do clean them every week but it doesnt seem to have made any difference they are getting worse and worse.

I cant see how i would repair this issue without having a pro do it which i imagine is a fortune.

Anyone else got any tips on how to clean this issue up and repair? any one with similar experiences?

thanks

Try some 1200 grit and wet and dry them then polish with a fine cutting compound with a DA

that is what happens when alloy oxidises.

you have damaged the varnish and it will just get worse as it works its way under.

remove and polish.

ah ok - oxidisation makes sense yes - so i should remove the old coating and polish the rim, What about re-coating the rim to stop oxidisation for while after the repair? is there a coating i can use?

Also has anyone got a youtube vid on this so i can see how its done.

thanks all

Just remove the lacquer and polish the bare alloy with metal polish such as Solvo Autosol or Peek and repeat as and when they go a bit dull.

I have a bare alloy 11 slat grill that lasts a long time between polishes.

I`m NOT recommending this as it is potentially dangerous but when I was younger and didn`t have access to a lathe I placed some axle stands..........................NO :ohno:
