Good morning everyone, after hearing many horror stories about a stripped sump plug and / or sump thread, I've never replaced the sump plug/washer during an oil change. Would this be in anyway detrimental to the car? It's always been a nice snug fit thus never thought it necessary to replace it. Best regards, Babs

the plug does not need changing. the washer if damaged should be changed. most people reuse the washer for many oil changes.

it should be a soft copper washer and some are not annealed to make them soft.

I just swap the washer with each filter change

They cost like 1£, i just replace them. Not worth draining new oil if it leaks.

I agree with the above, for what they cost I just fit a new one. http://minispares.co...|Back to search

I've never annealed the Minispares ones but it would be easy enough to do with a gas hob in the kitchen.

The A series likes o drop oil from just about everywhere, so the sump plug is usually the least of our worries  :-)

Thanks for the advice. I heated the old one up on the gas hob until it was glowing then doused it in cold water. Refitted it and its tight not leaking, touch wood. Torqued it up to about 34Nm which seemed more than sufficient. Cheers, Babs
