Yes, the tool makes a big difference. Bit of patience and care needed to pick out the old seal but it does come out eventually.

It's not a problem if the primary gear does come out. If you use the proper tool it uses the primary gear to pull the seal out anyway.

I use the tool but remove the primary gear and fit the seal over the gear on the bench then fit it on the engine then use the tool to push the seal home.
