My clubman estate 998 failed its MOT for a few things, one of which being a leaking exhaust manifold. I bought one of the mini spares cast manifold clamps and attatched it to the exhaust. The exhaust didnt really fit and it was at the wrong angle so I had to take the middle and rear exhaust mounts off to be able to get the clamp on. I tightened it up pretty tight and went to the back of the car to get the rear of the exhaust back on. I heard a good crack and and went round to see the bottom of the manifold sheared off.

My question is why it broke, did I overtighten the clamp or is the manifold just old? The exhaust could be bent from when the middle mounting broke and it got smashed into some speed bumps.

Should I find an old cast manifold on eBay to replace it or should I upgrade to something that flows better?Attached File  948A21B1-C655-49E9-8225-B7FA870D1E55.jpeg   52.12K   5 downloads

It will have been cracked most of the way around hence the exhaust leak. With the weight of the exhaust hanging off it as well if the centre hanger was broken.

I'd bin it and fit an lcb , alloy inlet and full system but I'm sure there's plenty of standard ones on ebay to choose from

There doesn't seem to be corrosion on the sheared off surface, so whatever happened must've been inflicted very recently.
It's easyto just buy and fit a stage 1 kit now, but your insurance might go up as well with it. All depends on what you want to do with the car! ;)

Upgrading is more about getting rid of the exhaust heated inlet than flow when the engine is in a mild state of tune. It's amazing what removing that heat does. It's a good time to get an alloy inlet manifold and Freeflow header.

Do you think I did the damage myself then when tightening up the clamp? I made it pretty bloody tight to get it to seal up. Think I will go for a stage 1 kit really, if the exhaust is damaged as well and I’ve got buy all the parts anyway

Stage 1 kit is a good call if you're not worried about deviating from standard spec.  Mind you, a tubular manifold doesn't come without its own problems- they are prone to warping their mounting surface where they fit to the head, which causes a blow.  However, this can take years to happen.

I don't think tightening the clamp would shear the cast iron manifold, but moving the exhaust around with it done up might do...

It is only a thing casting section at that point. Over-tighten it could well have done it.

Tip: to get them to seal, use Muffle Putty in the joint then use a jack to hold the pipe in place while doing up the clamp.

Either you broke it when tightening up the new clamp or most likely pulling the exhaust around trying to get it back on the rear mount's, If it had been cracked or broken before that you would see black soot around the break from running the engine but in the picture it's all nice and fresh.

Sounds like a well known Ausy yarn...must be a new Marino cross called a manifold...?

So I sheared my Manifold....not much wool on the bugger....hahahh

I wonder what muffle putty in the joint smokes like ?

Soz could not resist

If it's had a lower mounting bracket holding the downpipe to the gearbox that's either broken or come loose, that would cause it.

The nack to not cracking the manifold is to put the front clamp on but not tight with the rear supported up so its somewhere near. Don't tighten the front until you have the back on the mounts. You can then take the front clamp off put some exhaust putty round it and then clamp it up tight.

In Aussie slang, the full translation can't be printed here, but a 'family' version of it would be along the lines of;-

" Maaaate, go see Johno, down the Servo, heeez got muffapuddie. Don't smoke it maaaaate, tastes like kangawillafox do-do. Make sure Johno puts a Jack-me-off unda it will ya "
