I'm currently rebuilding an HIF6 and the damper assembly seems to have an extra piece that I don't see in the picture of the damper on the SU website (below). It's a little black coloured stamped steel cup shaped thing with a couple of tabs sticking sideways from its top, situated loosely between the plastic cap and the brass damper body. It's about the same diameter (less the tabs) as the brass damper body. Anyone have any idea what it's for? It seems to obstruct the piston movement occasionally which can't be a good thing.

It pushes down in to the piston tube, Its to stop the damper disappearing if it comes undone I think.

So I assume I need to ensure that the tabs spread slightly and engage and don't allow it to come free?

You wont have to spread the tabs, normally they can be a bugger to get in! use a very thin flat blade screwdriver to push gently into place.
