Ok,

I am replacing the valve stem oil seals on my head. It is an A+ Standard 1275 metro head.

There are no seals on the exhaust valves, however if i remember correctly on later 1275 heads, eg MPI heads the oil seals were fitted on the exhaust valve.

The question I have is - Do i fit the seal on the exhaust valve, or not?

Preferably I would like to.

your thought please.......

I have always done so, even on competition heads.

The exhaust valves run quite hot and some of any oil getting down the stem will burn. The ash from that is abrasive. Any oil that doesn't burn on the stem, will burn on the seats and this pits them pretty bad - even the unleaded types.

So for a modified head with stainless valves and bronze valve guides would you still fit all 8?

As above, I fit valve stem oil seals on inlets and exhaust.

Last time I missed out the exhaust seals the engine used more oil and was smoky on hot restart. I refitted the exhaust seals and it was much improved.

When I didn't fit the exhaust stem seals it would smoke at warm idle. Then next time the head was off I fitted them and all was solved.
