I think I've read through all the creaking threads on here but none fit the bill, they all seem to point to subframe mounts, ball joints or nylon cups etc.

Today I developed a creaking sound front passenger side which is speed/rotational related.  It was fine on the way to work but started half way home, only a 3mile journey.  It doesnt happen while accelerating or even maintaining speed, but take your foot off the gas and the creaking starts, getting slower as the car slows.  Its not road surface/bumps in the road related.  I can even get it to creak just pushing it along my drive, jack the car up and spin the wheel by hand and theres no noise at all.

Yesterday I fitted a HiLo kit including new knuckes and nylon cups, todays journey was the first after the kit.  Two weeks ago I fitted a new steering rack.  Prior to that almost exactly a year ago the car had new rubber cones, ball joints, shocks, CV's, various (poly) bushes associated with supension arms tie bars etc.

The car does have poly subframe mounts fitted prior to my ownership, I have a full solid mount kit ready to fit next weekend, but as it stands the poly mounts are there and have been for the past year (when there was no creaking).

The reason for the HiLo kit was the car was running in 4x4 mode miles off the ground due to the new cones, I only covered 2000miles in the last year and the cones havent compressed at all in that time, so HiLo kit to the rescue, I mention this at the front end geometry has now ovbiously changed dramatically in the last 24hrs to the last 12months.

The video below is not mine, but its identical to the noise I get and also affected by car speed.

Has it got the poly subframe mounts from the rear of the frame to the toe board? They are junk, shouldn't be allowed to be sold.

Phill, I would be surpised if it was the hub nut as its not been touched, but saying that I havent checked it.  Wheels have been on and off all weekend so I can double check the wheel nuts first thing in the morning, they were gunned on though so shouldnt really be lose, but again you never know.

Pete, yes it has the poly subframe mounts, not my doing, they are literally next on my list to do and have the solid mount kit sat here waiting to go on but want to figure out this creaking first if I can.

I fitted some to my last mini within a week they'd gone soft and the cush tubes were elongated, if that's happening then the frame will be moving around under the tower bolts which could be where your creaking is coming from?

Possibly, maybe I should just get the solid mount kit fitted first, the creaking sounds more like its coming from a wheel to me but everything looks tight.  However the poly subframe mounts are horrific so probably not helping the situation.

I got a clicking noise, thought it was Cv's however it happened when braking or accelerating. Just a single click. Got home and found all 4 bolts holding the disc to the drive flange were so loose i could put my finger on them twist and have them spin. I never touched these since i got the car, so re torque and loctite.

As you have just done the knuckles it may well be them or the cones / HiLo's as its all been disturbed.

Did you dig the old nylon cup out of the top arms ?

Were the new cups a tight fit in the arms ?

Was there any grease in the knuckle cups ?

Make sure the cones are fully seated and the HiLo's too, it could be them fretting
