Hi, was wondering if anyone could help. I have an oil leak from the timing chain cover on a 1979 mini 1100 special. Original engine, I thought that oil shouldn't get past the crankshaft bearing oil seal before entering the timing chain area or is oil suppose to get in to lubricate the chain?

Hoping that's the case which will mean just a new timing chain gasket around the cover.

Regards John

While changing it, it'snot a bad idea to do the seal while your at it and even replace the Chain & Sprockets.

On replacing the cover, they do need to be centraised before tightening down the bolts. There is a tool for doing this.

Also, when it's off, look at all of the bolt holes. Are they pushed inwards toward the gasket face due to the tightening process ?

If they are by much, it wont seal as those high areas hit 1st and the gaps between the holes aren't pressing on the gasket
