Hi I'm new to the whole mini culture and believe I have an 1980's 998cc round nose mini,

I'm having trouble understanding my vin plate? it is the B L CARS LTD. vin plate which is located on the inner wing, I believe I managed to translate the first section

XL2S1N being

X = B L Cars reference

L = 998 cc

2S = 2dr Saloon

1 = Round-nose

N = Special Deluxe?

which matches the vehicle but I don't understand what the digits after the N are there is 8 in total and there is no space stamped onto the plate to indicate it is separate sections.

Also is it possible to obtain the vehicles original registration from this source as I only have this plate and all other paperwork has been lost.

Please Help

Nathan

The numbers are only the production number for that type.

 How would you approach this situation to re-obtain the original registration/log book or do you think its impossible, I'm sorry if this is something that's blatantly obvious and I'm missing it I'm new to this and young

You need to apply from the DVLA assuming it's not been registered as scrapped, you can check it's still on there system by typing into google 'is my car taxed' and clicking on the Dvla site, enter your reg. (if you don't have the reg I suggest ringing the number in the link below)

If all is ok as in it's on the system then go here for logbook https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-log-book

If the car as no numberplates look closely at the windows to see if it's etched on them or if it has an old tax disc with the registration on.

Hope this helps

Hi K4N3Y,

the 'B L CARS' plate was fitted to 1980-1983 years approximately so your car is an early 80s model and is a Mayfair or HL etc, not a basic City.

From late 1980/ early 1981, the vin started SAX_XL2... so your car probably pre-dates this and would have likely been on an 'X' or 'V' registration.

Like Nick says, the 031001 number is a type approval code and means nothing to an individual car.  Everything you need is in the long XL2S number- it doesn't matter that there's no spaces as the numbers are mostly a serial number.

You can apply to the DVLA to get a logbook with form V62, available here - https://www.gov.uk/g...certificate.pdf

Leave the section with the number plate blank and maybe include a note explaining that the plates were missing/ stolen etc when you bought the car.  This service costs £25 and involves the DVLA writing to the previous owner, therefore it takes a few weeks but there's nothing to be concerned about if you are the legitimate owner of the car.

However, if you want to message me the VIN I can tell you if it's still on the DVLA computer and also tell you the registration number.

I went through this whole process with my 1971 Range Rover.  It had been 'plate raped' (for want of a better phrase...) in the distant past; someone had removed the VIN/ I.D plate and number plates from the car and fitted them on to a (presumably later) vehicle, probably to get free road tax.  I didn't know the registration number but fortunately, Range Rovers have the stamped VIN stamped on the offside chassis leg, so that was my way of claiming back the original registration.

I'd like to see that happen to a few tax exempt mpi coopers that are out there, as the value increases in early cars that were previously ignored like 70s ones that could start to happen as people discover the remains of the original cars, if they have the original engine and chassis then I can see the dvla having to pass the v5 to the correct car and either a Q plate and ved to pay or the crusher for the ringer! Good.

   Sounds a bit del-boy, the boys in blue used to do it...can it still be done ?

You just need a hpi check done using the vin, it's what dealers use.

Doesn't work for an early Mini to my knowledge, you need 17 (?) character VIN number.

The pre 91 (?)  Mini numbers are chassis numbers, before the SA Rover prefix ?

Yes, it's a bit 'hit n miss' entering a pre-VIN chassis number into the system but does often come up ok.  The problem you have, is not only were the digits inputted incorrectly (5 as S etc), there was often also random spaces and hyphens, seemingly put in at will, that can confuse matters... hence the standardised 17-digit VIN in 1980.

But I'm willing to give it a go if the OP wants to message me his VIN (nb- I am not a criminal  :lol:)
