Nick Bunkley / The Detroit News
DETROIT - It’s a MINI that’s not quite as mini.
BMW’s small-car brand with a cult-like following showed a new version of its Traveller concept Monday at the North American International Auto Show.
The MINI Concept Detroit has a winter sports theme, with a roof rack for skis or snowboards and compartments both inside and outside the car to store gloves, goggles and other gear for the slopes.
The Traveller first appeared at the Frankfurt show in September with a “Travelling in Style” theme, and a second iteration unveiled in Tokyo highlighted MINI’s British heritage. The one shown in Tokyo was stripped down and completely rebuilt for Detroit. A fourth concept version will be shown later this year.
The Traveller is to go into production by 2009. It is longer than MINI’s only U.S. model, the Cooper, creating a more usable back seat and extra cargo space in the rear (Brits call it the boot). There are four doors - an extra long one on each side and two in place of the usual hatchback. The B-pillar has been removed to give it the look of a coupe.
“This is not simply a larger MINI,” said BMW board member Michael Ganal as he introduced the Traveller. “The vehicle has been redesigned from scratch as numerous details and design elements show.”
Like the Cooper, the Traveller is BMW’s resurrection of a model that the original Mini brand sold several decades ago.

Thats because of all the disguising they have on it so you "dont know what it is" eventhough everyone does!i think it's fair to say the back end of the new 'clubman' (which is really an estate) looks more like accident damage than good design, it looks like a poorly fitted bodykit.
