The wheel arches on my black mini 30 are held on with 10x1/2 in screws rather than rivets. The problem is that the normal self-tapping screws I can find have such large heads that they do not fit into the cut-away properly and as a result force the arch to twist out. I am having trouble finding self-tapping screws with small heads and wondered if anyone on the forum knew of a source, please. It doesn't matter if they are black or silver as I can paint them...

All best wishes and thanks in advance

Mike

I used self tapping screws with a head size I liked and put spire clips the other side. Worked for me!

I use M4 Rivnuts and stainless steel M4 socket head cap screws.

Good ideas, thanks. I had never heard of rivnuts! I suppose an alternative is to use screws with locking nuts behind the wing.

Many thanks for responding. Much appreciated

Best wishes

Mike

You can buy the Rivnuts and fitting tool from Namrick together with the stainless steel M4 socket head cap screws and small stainless washers.
No more rust so long as you put a bit of grease on the Rivnuts and the screws always look good and are easy to tighten and remove.

That’s brilliant, thanks. May I impose further on your kindness and ask what size and type of Rivnut I need. The Namrick website has a dizzying array of types and sizes of M4 rivnuts and it would be really helpful to know what to order.

With best wishes

Cooperman suggested M4 rivet nuts, the .25 to 3.0 mm Namrick lists should be fine for the fender sheetmetal. You'll need the install tool too. Like this https://www.workshop...-riveter/AK393/

You could also look at http://www.memfast.co.uk/ for tooling and rivet nuts. I can't regularly get metric stainless rivet nuts we use in the bicycle shop in the US so I usually get them from the UK you guys have multiple sources.

Read quite a few threads on here on the merits of using stainless steel rivnuts in a mild steel panel, understand door mirrors are fixed using rivnuts, as a matter of interest anyone tell me what material these rivnuts are?

Trying to decide whether to use screws, rivets or rivnuts, what have you used and what material?

Aluminium rivnuts are the easiest to "set" and will do the job fine, if you then use stainless steel button head screws use plenty of Alumslip on the threads to prevent seizing. It's worth investing in a good tool and a variety of sizes of rivnuts because you'll find loads of other uses for them ... mounting the grill being just one.

I should have said I’m initially using these to fit some Huddersfield group 2 arches in place of the standard arches that are presently riveted on.

Over a painted surface? How did that go? Any cracking on the paint?
