I'd swap them both for halogen and fit a relay kit, it's easy enough to do and the new brighter lights will then actually take no load off the old switches/wiring.
Basically what he said. Wired By Wilson can provide you with a 'plug n play' loom for relays.

Good advice from Pete, though the halogens won't create any axtra load provided the bulbs are rated the same as the sealed beams.

You don't necessarily need a relay kit, I just carry a spare switch in the tool bag

Yes, you CAN just swap the lights, but sooner or later the lighting switch will fail. I used to carry Minispares replacement looms and spare light switches till I installed a WIRED BY WILSON kit It deals with the problem, tho it does remove that adrenaline rush when your lights disappear in the dark.
I would fit it at the same time as you install the new lights.
Good luck

I used to run 130/90 bulbs in my cars with Valeo/Cibie headlamp replacement units, never had a wire burn out on a loom or switch

Wipac are OK whilst Cibie or Hella are the best.
Autopal are also quite good.

Just digging up this thread - I was planning to convert my sealed beams to halogen at some point, but now the bulb has just gone in one of my headlamps (1989 Mayfair), so makes sense to do it now.
Moss Twickenham branch is fairly local. So any recommendations to what they have:

Also, will they fit to the existing headlamp bowl I have fitted or do I need to modify or replace any parts?
Would these all require a relay?
Thanks

The halogen kit will be plug and play with only the sidelight wires to be cut and reterminal'd.
I can't comment on the wiring changes needed to fit the relay kits as I haven't fitted one (I have fitted multiple halogen conversions)
