Hi, what is the best value for money set to buy at the moment? Is it worth paying out for a good set or do they all do the same job? I've seen a set in machine mart for £45 and on eBay a set for around £15

I have the Machine Mart set and its been a boon. However i now have a Snapon set and its a far superior set. Its not cheap either (got it cheap through my lad) at around £200 second hand.

I have to say i have beaten the crap out of the Machine Mart set and its still going.

Would you steer clear of the £15 eBay set?

Well its blocky but should do the job for not a lot of money. I would has a serious look at the faces of the hammers and the surface finish of the dollies before using it though.

They always say cheap for a reason!!

I also bought a machine mart set and it has served me well, not as good as a pro set but then I ain’t that good either. Only thing I bought in addition was a door skinning hammer

Machine mart are pushing vat free this bank holiday as well.

I've got the wooden handled machine mart set, obviously not as good as a professional set but I've been pleased with them.

With most sets, it's not the dollies that are a problem, in fact, some of my most frequently used dollies are from a cheap set.

When looking for panel beating equipment, you really want to find decent quality hammers.

I find the hammers in the cheap sets are often very unbalanced which makes them an effort to use. I like my hammers to have enough weight to fall under their own weight and bounce back to the starting position. This makes them much easier and less tiring to use especially when skinning doors. They then fall squarer avoiding blow marks on the panel.

It all depends on the use really, If it's occasional use at home and you are just 'roughing out' then a cheap set will do the job. If you want a bare metal finish to your repairs then you will find it easier with a better hammer

This is the hammer I use most frequently  https://eshop.wurth....cgid/en/GB/GBP/

I have had mine for 15 years and it's still excellent.

Just keep the faces of your equipment clean and flat and you won't have too many problems.

Cheers

Ben
