Hi all, I have a 1990 British racing green Cooper that has never been paint repaired in any way but the time has come to freshen up the front valence and the engine bay.

The ID plate has a tiny dent exactly in the center of the 3 letter code but I think it says RMV or more likely RWV as I can`t find any codes with RMV.

On checking the dual code I am still given HNS, HNA and HAM for the BRG and there are 2 later codes on top of that !!

I`m edging towards HNA for the base coat as the years seen about right but i`m just checking with the gang first.

I did this one recently (British open classic) and that was HNA

However, the colour doesn't cover too well so requires a black primer for best results. I had this colour matched too but was told by the suppliers (time served experts) that the colour is a nightmare to match perfectly so I had to blend the colour to get it to work. It won't go edge to edge

My paint supplier also told me that he painted both sides of a Montego back in the 90's and despite 10 coats of base and 2 drop coats over white primer, you could still see the primer through the paint in the sun....

The paint job in the picture above was 4 coats of base and 2 drop coats over black primer and was absolutely fine

Great, thanks for that.

I remember having to use epoxy black primer on another BRG car a few years ago so will definitely be using it again.

Its mad how Rover managed it over white primer so well with one hit. I pulled a rear bumper off a late Rover Metro GTA in BRG and where there wasn`t any white primer it was bare metal........with no rust !!.  It was a good evidence not to use underseal I suppose.

Funnily enough, we had to match the paint the old fashioned way using colour chips as when they used the scanner they couldn't get a good reading as the paint was so thin that the primer beneath was disturbing the readings

The paint code for a BRG 1990 Cooper is RWV.

Just out of interest is it an RSP or mainstream Cooper?
