Hi all
Just under the mini looking for it’s latest oil leak and noticed my drivers side drive shaft seems to be a lot further out than the passenger side... I did replace the seal on this a month or so ago but was sure it pushed back on properly.. either way does this seem wrong? Should I give it a good shove back on fully??
On a side note, since removing the drive shaft, replacing the seal and refitting I’ve had a very stiff neutral. Is this just a coincidence or have I mucked up somewhere

This does look too far out to me, it may need you to remove the rubber gaiter to get good metal on metal contact to knock it back in.

I don't think this would affect neutral but worth having a look underneath to see if its anything obvious.

and yes it is not retained by the C clip as it should be way further in. but i think you have other issues going on.

Someone may correct me here as I’m not 100% but I think the oil seals sit to the edge of the side cover or your old ones where, where as yours are pushed further in plus the camera angle makes it look further out. Did you not attempt to push it back? I wouldn’t of done any harm whilst you was under there.

When you changed the seal and had the drive shaft out was the retainer clip on the end of the joint?? If the joint slides back in and pulls easily out then it may have broken. The shiny part of the joint is where the seal usually runs, also the seal looks to be in quite away in the photo.

I will get the car over my pit tomorrow and take a proper look, I definitely put the clip back on when I replaced the seal... there doesn’t appear to be any oil leak from the shaft input so I guess that’s a positive!

Either there's no seal or It's been knocked in to the diff housing to far. Best of removing the shaft and fitting a new seal correctly.

without the seal wouldnt it be pouring oil?? heres a slightly different angle, just seems odd... ive got this week off work and a couple of little jobs i wanted to do to the mini... i guess it wont hurt if i have to remove the shaft and try again!

if you removed the diff side cover have you remembered to put the small O-ring oil seal around the indent spring

well thats a relief! I take it theres no logical reason this would cause my neutral to become reasonably stiff?? before i changed the seal it was fine, once put back together it was instantly a lot harder to move the gear stick left and right in neutral. to be honest i dont mind it as it gives a pretty nice sold feel when selecting gears, just seems odd that it changed so dramatically
