Big topic...very budget dependent
You also need to work on the car...suspension upgrades / wheels and tyres
Its difficult to start at the bottom end of the scale and gradually work up, as you will for ever changing this that and the other and the budget will go.
There are so many options engine wise decisions have to be made early, (cam / head / gearing) and you have to commit to them. Otherwise you will have the engine out every week, and be tuning it morning noon and night.
Gearbox wise a helical one can be used, but will need a good low diff, at least a 3.9
If you want to do any good, Class break is 1400cc so you need to be at least 1330cc with a 296 ish cam and a good cylinder head has to be a priority. A standard bottom end is OK for some decent power.
Not sure what your twin carbs are but they need to be HS4 1 1/2 inchers

engine, as mentioned anything under 1400cc, cam as above 296 or more head a very good one. some form of LSD. carbs i would bin the twins and either fit a HIF44 on a good modded inlet. carb mods as well. or a weber. also look at some mappable ignition system.
will be a ******* to use on the road. will drink fuel and will not go very fast but will get there quickly.
