Are there any insurance companies that do limited mileage second car classic style policy's for an 18 year old? Tried a couple, Lancaster and Hagerty but no can do. I would be either main or named driver.

My lad is deparate to own a mini and I'd prefer if he kept his Swift as a daily driver for work over the next winter etc and use the min as a fun car until next Spring, give us chance to give it a shake down and fix it up.

So basically I'm after the best / cheapest way to insure the mini for say 3000 miles a year so that we can both climb in and drive it.

I think the question is which insurers will cover an 18 year old, i'm not aware of any but there must be some.

When I rebuilt my sprite in 2001/2001 I finished it just before my 21st birthday and had to wait a month to get insurance on it.   With my minis back then I insured with normal insurance companies like Directline at the time and also HIC, might be worth ringing some the normal insurers and seeing what they say.

The cheapest way will be keeping him as main driver on the swift, then named on the mini.

Many limited mileage policies don’t accrue no claim discount.

Unfortunately it’s a case of ringing them and asking. Try Adrian Flux.

Hi,

Carol Nash do classic car policies, just added my mini to the cosworth policy for £50 bringing the total for both to £235 or something stupid. Worth a call...

Cheers,

Gavin  :proud:

We've decided to buy the car so my son will become a mini owner, yey.

Our latest plan is to sell his swift worth £2k and save £1000 insurance and just have the mini, but add him to his mums insurance if it's off the road.

The car is not exactly factory spec, but I'll start a new thread on modifications.

As long as he’s got a car insured in his name they can’t accuse him of fronting.

I insured my dad as a second driver on my car up until the age of 30 as it made it cheaper.

The fact he lived 300 miles away and never drove them didn’t matter.

I didnt word rpthat clearly, I did mean we will insure him on his mums car as well so he has the option to use her car if the mini is off the road. The mini will all be in his name, with me as named driver.

As per my 'modifications' thread, Admiral came out cheapest, even declaring the Alloy wheels etc,  than all the specialists who seem to struggle with young drivers, including Flux.

Footman James do have a limited mileage policy for youngsters.

Just be aware of the 'risks' of using mainstream insurance policies for classics, or the positives of using a specialist, before you commit.
