Ok am getting mixed messages here

Every once in a while my gearbox seems to show signs of baulk ring failure - crunching, difficulty getting from 3rd to 2nd etc etc

This happens for a couple of days - so I double declutch etc

Then all is fine for weeks/months on end - no issues with the box at all

I assumed - perhaps incorrectly? that if the baulk rings were shot would the gearbox always fail - or does it get worse only gradually??

Or is it something else?

Just trying to save money on taking it all out to possibly find nothing is wrong with the gearbox.....

Any suggestions gratefully received

Lenny

The baulk rings are a sort of friction clutch when they wear they just have less friction to speed/slow the gears to matching speed to engage. Double declutching is also a method to match gear speed, so if doing that properly can stop the crunching it may well just be the baulks and the gearbox can function well enough to last years.

Since it's a full strip down to replace baulks odds on it'll be worthwhile replacing other bits too.

Hi,

Unless there's something really wired going on in your box I'd look at clutch hydraulics first.

What oil are you using, although I'd expect that to be an all the time problem as well?

Cheers  :proud:

Hi,

It is a wear thing with baulk rings, but that wouldn't explain it being fine for weeks at a time..

Cheers  :proud:

That's what I thought seems to long between issues to perhaps be the Baulk rings - if clutch what do you suspect?

Just seems so random and spaced out between issues?

Perhaps Guessworks could offer a suggestion?

Thanks

This or the Primary Gear Bushes are were I'd be looking.

With the Baulk Rings, it's a one way trip, ie, they won't get bad and then come good for a while.
