I think that snorkle is there to draw warm air off the exhaust during cold months. When I ran an MG Metro air box similar to that I cut the snorkle off, had some plenum chamber that I could not use.
Stuart is really good with all states of tune, having built my 1293 to S/C spec and using one of his kits I have been back to get things re-mapped on the RR. Am actually due a checkup soon!
