Only had this car a week so just getting to know it. 1988 Mayfair, standard 998.

Noticed bit of a misfire when cold but seemed fine when warm. Done a few miles and drives well on the road, until this afternoon.

Now it' has a full on misfire but didn't conk out, managed to coax it home. Plugs were black so I changed to the new ones we had ordered. Seemed OK, after picking up beer from supermarket, started it and running rough again. On the short journey back, sometimes ok, then misfiring. When misfiring The rev counter would drop to zero then spring back into life.

Then I swapped to a coil from another car but in a brief run it still seems to hiccup.

I'm ruling out mixture or head gasket because that would give permanent symptoms. With new plugs and known good coil I'm thinking it has to be the ignition kit?? Any other suggestions or checks I can do?

It's a 998 with what looks like a Powerspark aftermarket electronic ignition kit. I suspect this is what's failing?

I'd imagine it's a strong possibility, definitely worth checking

Identical symptoms to my Magnetronic death, tho it only gave me a couple of hundred yards before expiring; you were lucky.

At least it is an easy job.

Just had to change the electronic points on my Commer camper with the same symptoms (they had been in there nearly ten years) I pinched the Accuspark dizzy out of my Morris Minor and the camper is now running perfectly, just need to find a proper replacement long term.

Quick update.  Turns out it as an accuspark unit in there, not powerspark.  Now replaced with an Ignitor, runs so much better now but a good few more miles required to confirm all sorted.

The original coil appears to have been for a ballast system as it was only reading around 1.8 ohms (as car is 1988 assume a standard coil for that year was fitted), but theres 12V at the coil so fairly confident the ballast has been removed, non ballast sports coil on there now.
