I'm at the stage on my Estate rebuild where i'm doing the front suspension. I've thrown a few bits together but I'm not sure I'f i'm doing it in the best order? Can someone help me out which arms I should be putting on first? Do I still need a cone compressor to do the fronts?

(P.S. is there any books that actually cover building a mini from scratch? Most I've got seem to just cover taking one part on and off at a time?)

With *most* hi-los it is just possible to build the front suspension with no conpressor (though easier with) , without hi-los you can't.

You need to install the rubber dougnut spring and cone/hi-lo before putting the top arm (with knuckle in it) in place. Use plenty of grease in the knuckle cup and plenty of copper slip or similar on everything else.

Do not tighten the bottom arm pin's nut until the car as sat on its wheels with its full weight on. This allows the bushes to rotate to suit the 'usual' bottom arm position. If you tighten the nut up with the suspension on droop (ie car on stands) then the bushes will be permanently stressed/twisted when the car is on the road. But make sure you don't forget (could be seeks until you get that far) - stick a big note/sign on the dash or something!!

you will need a cone compresser to get the front rubber springs in

fit the rubber spring in before the top arm gos on

and another tip is when you fit the bushes on the bottom arm do it with the arm at the hight it will be with the weight on the wheels


if you dont do this the rubber bush will twist
