But on the windscreen surround I just purchased the full panel, wasn’t a lot more than a heritage scuttle for the peace of mind knowing everything had been replaced. It also comes with inner pillar panels.
This stage I had fitted a piece on upper frame, and cut out the rest

Then I repaired the roof and gutter

Then fitted new windscreen surround, just took my time and used templates and also blocks to help shape the material

You might manage to scrub it up and soak it in rust eater/converter, but if the rust is inside the seam it's liable to resurface.
If you make your own patches do it before you cut out the old and you can shape then over the top.
Using copper (scrap pipe) to back your welds will help you bridge gaps and be tidier, especially where it'd be hard to get a grinder on 'em.
If the roof itself isn't penetrated to the inside, I think I'd cut out the back and side panel rot to expose the roof part of the seam treat that and patch back up - better than adding a join above the gutter to leak and there's less shaping and better opportunity to hide joins below.

I cut out the section completely, then fabricated repairs to each panel separately, worked out really well for my first attempt.

Fantastic work there! Im having to do the exact same repair on mine this week.
I also need to fit a windscreen surround panel, do you have any more pictures or a build thread detailing the process you used?

Thanks,
not sure if much more on my post, but the repairs start on this page

its pretty straightforward if you take your time and make templates if needed, I used a bent piece of 8mm bar shaped to roof corner to shape the corner piece and a block of wood cut to correct radius for the top corner of frame
