I have a 1275 pre-A+ block and the 12A1261 dipstick from a 998 block.  I have tried a 12G107 plastic dipstick tube but each time I pull the dipstick out the tube comes out of the block.  Has anyone encountered this before, if so what was the solution?  I understand that I should have a metal tube but these are no longer available.

Not much you can do other than hold the tube.

Would a rubber washer/seal around the section that fits into the block help? Might just be enough to grip ...

I presume they were originally fitted with a high temp retaining compound or something similar.

If no-one comes up with an answer it might be worth starting a new thread asking what (if anything) would be the best thing to use (esp as you're tight & went for a second hand one :P).

For the short while I used the Plastic Tubes, I used adhesive to hold them in, but really, they are junk. I've always noticed on cars fitted with them, even the original factory ones, there's always at least a stain of oil around them, or more.

I know the metal ones are dear, but they are the only ones worth fitting, the longer ones are better.

Did you supply your 12A1261 tubes to P&L Minis? - they're still showing stock.

I don't think Mini Sport (in Aust) have any left.

They are not something that normally wears out, have a look for used ones, I've managed to pick up a few.

I have made them when desperate, but not my first choice !!!!
