Hi

Im abusing my lovely mini this saturday morning as I have entered this event  to celebrate the law abolishing the need for a red flag walked in front of a motor vehicle in UK

The Brighton Speed Trials, in full The Brighton National Speed Trials, is commonly held to be the oldest running motor race.[1] The first race was held 19–22 July 1905 after Sir Harry Preston persuaded Brighton town council to tarmac the surface of the road adjacent to the beach between the Palace Pier and Black Rock to hold motor racing events. This stretch was renamed Madeira Drive in 1909 and the event is still held there, normally on the second Saturday of September each year. In 1936 Motor Sport described the event as: "undoubtedly the most important speed-trials on the British Calendar." [2]

The event is currently run as a quarter mile sprint for both cars and motorcycles, held under the auspices of the Motor Sports Association. The event is organised by the Brighton and Hove Motor Club, with the Sprint Section of the Vintage Motorcycle Club in charge of the Motorcycles.

I have been a spectator almost  every year since 1984

Following on from my first ever timed trial sprint at  Goodwood "triumph" I will be donning my fireproof onesie yet again to fly the mini flag.

Its a great event - google brighton speed trials for details - and if you come along its full paddock and up to the start line  access is open to all spectators so would be nice to meet fellow owners.

Elf n safety will one day soon I recon change or ban this historic annual motoring event

Mines the only mini entered ..... so I will at least be the fastest mini

Im in the road going handicap class. Practice and timed runs start at 9am and will be done by 12:00 - its an all day event with 170 cars of every period and type  and also motorbikes  - all doing a 1/4 mile at full chat

Weather looks to be good too

Well - I did it ...... and put in x2 17sec 1/4 mile runs.

It was my first time,  and Im on  on a mild piper road cam,  single 1" 3/4 carb  -  standard air filter and twin box exhaust -  so I recon there maybe a second or bit  more to aim for next year

Not by any means fast compared to most at the event  - but a bit faster ET  over 1/4 mile  the a '67 Sunbeam Tiger V8  and '69 Mk1 Loutus Cortina and just a few others of the 170 entrants.

They might have missed a gear or stalled ..... but Im taking it regardless !!!

Also  my car that featured in local newspaper photo  press report of the event

Minis are great aren't they ....

Not many cars you can run at national speed trials on saturday - take to concours event on Sunday, and drive to work in on Monday
