Hi,

I'm rebuilding my hubs with brand new Delphi ball joints for the first time. I've gone by the Haynes manual and have the joint fitting nicely with no play and smooth movement all around.

I say smooth... although it moves nicely and evenly it has a notchy feel & sound. Upon closer inspection this is the surface finish of the ball

You can feel the ridges with a nail. I have 4 in total from 2 packs all with some degree of finish like above. Though this one is the worst.

Is that normal? Its certainly not what I was expecting

And yes they are genuine Delphi Parts, they came in a Delphi box with a seal

Many thanks

Elliott

That's about all you'll find now days for a finish, but I've found the Delphis to be the best currently available.

The originals were a ground finish, but with the low volumes of these days, they are only a turned finish.

You could lap them in, but I don't bother.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ll get them fitted then. Just a bit disappointed to find even the best parts not being perfect.

I'd be a bit worried about changing the profile, but I suppose the ridges will act as an indicator. The ball end will take most of the load, depending how tightly you shim them. The grease distribution funny might prove to be half serious if they don't have the ground flat grease channel that the originals had.

If you wan't to try and improve the finish, assembling with valve lapping paste and spinning the taper pin seems the preferred method, but bear in mind you can't really know about what surface hardening you'll be removing.

Since the movement felt even I have left them as they are.
These Delphi’s do have the flat grease channel like the originals.

3 have gone in nicely. One doesn’t have even movement/ resistance. I’m not sure if it’s the hub that has damage though
