Water Pump Pulley And Crank Pully Alignment

Best Answer 1293gt , 05 September 2018 - 05:24 PM

Does everybody's crank damper look like mine or are there shallower items that would allow correct alignment?

Maybe the Water pump pulley is a possibility or I may have a mismatch of parts??

Hello all,

please could anyone help with the above?

My crank damper pulley is about 3/4" further out than my water pump pulley. I know that I have to remove the timing access ring from the rear of the damper pulley but that will not make it any closer to lining it up.

My only options are to space the water pump pulley out accordingly or are there alternative Damper/water pulleys that I have a mismatch of?

Thanks in advance.

I have a spacer on mine, inside the pulley and also one on the fan itself to get it close enough to the radiator. You will be able to get the correct parts right size etc from somewhere like MiniSpares.

Thanks very much maccers.

I have the spacers for the outside of the water pump pulley to get the fan closer to the rad, but cannot see any spacers for the inside if you know what I mean?

If you space the water pump pulley out, you will also need to space the alternator pulley out.
The crank pulley should sit in line - what is holding it further out?

Hello GreameC,

there's nothing there apart from the new belt drive kit I've installed. The crank damper is right up against the Timing pulley.

Who’s belt drive kit is it? MiniSpares, Trigger or....?

I wonder if it is supposed to use a modified bottom pulley?

Oh yes, I see.

This is what it says at the start of the 4th / last paragraph.  I quote:-

As Deadsquare posted, the plate on the Damper needs to be removed and on some kits, the timing belt pulley on the crank may need machining. You can check this against a Chain Drive Sprocket.

I'm sorry, I apologise. I should not have butted in. I have not been helpful.

I have never fitted a belt drive on the camshaft, only replaced a broken one with a duplex chain.

While doing it, I also replaced one bent valve, two broken rockers and a holed piston.

I know that I'm an old stick in the mud and many will think I am wrong, but I'm afraid that I add the "cam belt conversion" to the "coil spring conversion", as one of the improvements that Mini can well do without.
