Just having a ponder. Can you plug weld from below or do you need gravity on your side to fill the hole?

It isn't too difficult I just find upping the power helps

Also upping the wire feed a notch when welding overhead helps and make sure you are well covers up as any spatter drops down on you!

Hi,

Drill right through then put a piece of copper on the bottom and weld from the top...

Cheers  :proud:

As has been said, power up slightly and wire speed up. Settings vary by welder so have a practice until you are happy.

If the weld finish is tall then it's unlikely you have enough penetration  so make sure those welds are nice flat domes (also much easier to grind back)

Plug welds upside down are no problem. Turn up the welder to a high current/fast wire speed as normal for this type of joint and practice on test pieces to get the best results. Some welding machines have a timer facility which aids weld conformity but this is not essential as with a bit of practice good results can be obtained.

I drill a 5mm hole and use 0.6mm wire, cut the end of the wire to remove the "ball" every time and dress the swarf off from the back of the drilled holes.

Clamp the pieces tight and weld the joint as if you were welding from the top.

Be weary of weld 'blobs' falling on you!
It hurts like he'll when in goes thru your trousers and boxers... ? trust me!

Happy welding!

I've done normal welding upside down. Just though you had to fill the drilled hole with weld more.
