Hey everyone,

I am looking to buy an exhaust system and I would appreciate some advice on how to get a nice rumble sound from the muffler.

Basically I DON'T want it to sound like a ricer or have a raspy sound.

I have a 1295cc twin su engine.

I was thinking of a fletcher but I am not sure yet.

Could you guys help me out please?

Twin-box RC40 twin-box or a Maniflow twin-box with a 'cherry-bomb' as the first box are both good. Make sure you have a single exit pipe as the twin final exit pipes cause a loss of power. The diameter should be 1.75".

I currently have an RC40 twin box side exit - its a tad on the quiet side for my liking.

Im thinking of going centre exit single box 1.75 -

Would be interested to know (cooper man ?)  if single box Maniflow 1.75,  would cost any power over twin box  1.75 ?

I have competed in a sprint (goodwood)  and speed trial (brighton),  and will be doing a hill climb (bo peep) soon.

I have enjoyed doing them so much I intend to enter more next year.

Matt - brighton

I don't think the difference between single and tin box Maniflow systems would be noticeable.

The single-box Maniflow was, I thought, a bit noisy on a 1275 but OK on a 998. I don't like noisy cars, but I have rally cars and they are not permitted to be noisy. In fact I changed to a tin-box RC40 system as it is a bit quieter than a twin-box Maniflow.  No point in having the best car for the event, but then not being allowed to start because the decibel-meter fails you at scrutineering. Remember, "noise annnoys"!

Thanks for your help so far.

In the videos I have seen, a side exit fletcher sounded very nice with less rasp in my opinion, than the rc40 and maniflow.

But of course it probably sounds different in a video than in real life.

Does anyone have a fletcher system that could share their opinion on as well?

I have a Play Mini back box on mine with a header and straight pipe to the muffler.....sounds great and not at all boomy or droning on the highway. Nice bark when you wind it up and a little pop and burble on the over run. Quiet when you're just cruising.....

Hi,

I've got a play mini twin box system, sounded lovely on my 1380, maybe a single box would be about right for you on a 1275.

Don't go for the 2" system as you'll loose bottom end power.

Cheers  :proud:

maniflow all day long

I would have said the same a few months ago, and I agree when first fitting but they rust like they're at the bottom of the sea. Considering ours has only seen rain a couple of times and is garaged for most of it's life it took considerable violence to separate our exhaust when I needed to do some work (and yes, I appreciate that significant moisture is from the exhaust gases themselves). This is the downfall of slip-joint type systems, but I've never had one this bad on other cars.

Maniflow are certainly better than the 'cheaper' options but I've lost some respect for them recently. I don't think there's a viable alternative so bought another when I got rid of the LCB, if somewhat begrudgingly.

I really like the sound of my twin box RC40, I'm considering going to a single box though...

Rcm maniflow reverse cone system on a 3-1 manifold

I had the maniflow rcm road version with a maniflow freeflow. It replaced an rc40 and performed better and sounded better - not loud, just bloody lovely.

I had a twin box RC40 system on my 1293 injection/supercharged and went to a single box, only because the twin box split at the join and I needed the car for an Mot next day and all they had was a single box RC40. Its definately louder, by quite a bit in my opinion, but not loud like I was meaning it to be (think max power etc...)

Thanks everyone,

What size pipe is best for sound and performance?

1.75" is the best for a 1275 and a 1.625" for a 998.

The pipe diameter needs to be the same from the joint at the ex. manifold right to the final exit point as this optimises the gas velocity. Twin rear exit pipes create very poor final exit flow and can lose as much a 5 bhp together with loss of mid-range torque and increased fuel consumption.
