My alternator is noisy. Sounds like a bearing noise. Is there anything I can do or will it be a new item. 1989 mini 1000.

Fairly easy bearing change if needed. Got a picture?

Hi,

You could strip it down and fit new bearings.

Cheers  :proud:

Does it get louder with the headlights on?

Could also be a rectifier.

Are you sure it's the alternator? You could try running the car without the belt to make sure it is the alternator. You can also spin the water pump and alternator by hand to see if they are making strange noises or are wobbly

Hi,

They're easy enough to repair. In the second picture the lump to the right of the plug, with 2 bolts in, is the regulator.

Take that off carefully so you don't break the brushes off it.

Then take the pulley and fan off, remove the 3 long bolts and strip it all down.

Swap the bearings and rebuild.

That's a rough outline, but if you've got the time and was planning on buying a new one there's no harm in having a go...

Cheers  :proud:

It's an A127, I can fit a pair of bearings for £20. It is rather old now I would simply rebuild it fully or have it rebuilt.
