Documentation / Notes for my NVQ2 Engine Section

Currently I only have one part left within my Engine section of my NVQ2 which is the Cambelt section .. Ergh.

Previous Experience with this would be over 2 years ago I assisted a work colleague with 2 Cambelts at work so he could attempt to teach me. I have since forgotten most of what he taught me that day and my current garage are not running my apprenticeship therefore its a case of trial and error at home.

VW Golf Mk4 - Cambelt Practice Attempt One..

Luckily my front garden looks like a scrap yard and we have a VW Golf Mk4 that requires a Head gasket replaced so my amazing partner has allowed me to practice my Cambelt on this one first (As if I screw this one up the engine technically it was already broken..)

Once you've locked everything in place, it shouldn't be hard to do them.

Is the Mk4 transverse or longitudinal? The MK2s I used to do with just tippex on the sprocket/pulley and away I went but there should be timing tools which allow for no margin of error.

So, I've just discovered you can no longer add photos on here which ruins my plans of a detailed write up. Afraid it will be a old fashioned step by step guide.

 

The theory is there in my head as I've done a lot of research before I started, however I need to be able to do it start to finish with confidence otherwise my NVQ man will never sign it off. Its Transverse, I haven't added it yet but I've got that far but want to practice with timing pins as well as the car I get at college may need to be done with Pins rather than timing marks as I have no idea what I'll be working on until I turn up. :)

Does you current workshop use a tech site like autodata! Step by step instructions on them to take the guesswork out. If not then a timing belt kit from gates usually has them in.

I've done a MK4 Golf 1.6 16V. I used 2x 8mm? drill bits as locking tools for the cams. I was surprised at how easy it was.

I couldn't work out the Imgur, So i'll go back to it.

Luckily I've got a Timing Belt book plus I printed off the Autodata version as well. 

I also have a box with a assortment of Timing Pins so one should fit.

I'm still in the process of practising as it keeps Raining. I hate Rain

Piston no1 at tdc (nearest belt end) line up crank pully mark or make your own using tippex loosen tensioner and remove belt , replace tensioner and belt along with the water pump and refit new belt, crank engine over twice to make sure the marks still line up, i refit a road wheel and put it on top gear, if all good refit covers and aux belt etc, job done

I bought said Golf cheaply from a 'VW Specialist' off of eBay, for a mate. It ran but kept giving a MAP sensor error.

When I checked the (brand new) Cam belt, I found they'd timed it with a casting mark instead of the timing mark.



Just something to be aware of.
