With engine replacement imminent I've just tested the 0 - 60 time in my standard 1989 998 mini on 10" wheels - 35 seconds!(SatNav)
Is that about right?

No.

When I had the 850 engine in mine it was quicker than that.

How much quicker? I have City E gearbox and the engine's not painted red.

Hi,

Paint if red then, it's always worth an extra 10 bhp!

Cheers  :proud:

Generally a bog standard 998 should hit 60 in a shade over 21 seconds.

Although if it's your first car, in your mind you KNOW it does it in 16 seconds, 15 if the engine's red   :D

An original 850 Mini did 0 - 60 in between 24 and 27 seconds.

A 998 Cooper took c.15 seconds.

Isn’t a City E spec box fitted with a higher final drive so would typically be slower accelerating anyway?

Hi,

I believe you may be correct. It would be best to check the specs to get the correct information...

Cheers  :proud:

When I first got my mini on the road I couldn’t do 60.... the first 100 miles I remember thinking I’ll drive it really slow and steady to be ready for any problems... once I was confident I decided to give it the beans only to find out that my slow and steady driving was actually as fast as it could go

My 998 with 60bhp did 0-60 in 13 seconds, that’s with a 3.4FD.

in standard form it’s low 20s iirc.

City E's had 2.95 diffs. It shouldn't make a massive difference as you can go faster before changing up. You could probably get to 60 quicker in 3rd.

I think there's something not at all right with your Mini, it should go well better than what you are experiencing. I'd suggest starting with a decent tune up, that will also check the 'health' of the engine.

I timed my Cooper 'S' using a calibrated speedo and 0 - 60 was 7.3 seconds using just 1st & 2nd, and 7.9 using 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

I have a SCCR gear box and a 3.9:1 FDR. Just using 1st & 2nd meant using about 7300 rpm.
