Is there any reason why I shouldn't be able to fit Yoko 539's in 165 section on my 12" x 4.5" Rover Minilite style rims (1998)? The 145's make the car feel under-tired, and although my long term intention is to fit a wider rim for now just improving the tyres would be desirable. Any known clearance issues?

Left: 145/70r12   Right: 165/60r12 a539. No clearance issues/  cost around £60 each just for the tyres, and extra if you need them fitting/balancing.

I have used A539`s on 4.5" Rover Minilights for decades. Apparently 5" is supposed to be the ultimate rim width for 165`s but if you have ever been in a Mighty mini racer you will know how good the standard rover Minilights are with Yokos.

I cant see any performance gain on a road car over the standard rover wheels, just a style thing I guess.

You will probably need a 3 mm spacer on the back wheels to clear the shocks and the appropriate longer studs. It`s been a while so hopefully someone will come along to verify.

A 165 section width tyre on a 4.5" width rim is about ideal. It is what I have on my Cooper 'S' and it means I don't need wheel arch extensions.

Thanks for such fast and informative answers. I'll go with the 165's then, if I decide to swapping the wheels at a later date I'll already be on the right tyres anyway.

You won't need to swap the wheels. A 4.5 x 12" wheel is absolutely right for a 165 section width tyre.

I have sets of both 4.5" and 5" wide wheels for my Cooper 'S' and I don't notice any difference with 165 tyres on either width.
