As above - I want to have single key access but I have push button door handles and a Mk1 boot handle. Looking at Minispares replacement barrels listing the early and late boot handle barrels look the same so can I interchange them? if so I can take the barrel out of the later boot handle that came with the door handle set and fit it in the early 'T'handle?

Yep done it on mine, bought a new set of mk3 door handle and mk3 boot handle and swapped the boot handle barrel to a mk1.

Why do you need to remove the square rod?

I can't remember what I did now, don't remember having to fit a pin though

Me neither, I can’t remember removing the shaft either.
OP - In your photo it looks like the old barrel has been removed, without removing the shaft?

That's correct - but the handle is secured to the car by the crimp in the square rod holding the chrome cup (bottom right) which secures the mounting block with the captive threads that bolt it to the bootlid. You can't get the barrel out without removing the little brass pin that I've left sticking out of each carrier. Those pins are covered by the chromed blocks that bolt to the lid. On the newer ones the one spring pin does both jobs.
Hope that makes sense!

I don’t remember the crimped bit on mine, but it was 10 years ago. But I certainly didn’t drill and pin anything.
Maybe mine had a circlip rather than the crimp.

Something like that would have been a lot easier!
