My Mini Cooper sport (1275, w-reg) has failed MOT due to ‘Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint excessively worn‘.

What does this part look like and what is it’s function?

Thanks!

Here's a link. They are adjustable via shims, to a point. If worn irregularly as often happens it will need replacing. It sits at the bottom of the hub, connecting it to the bottom arm.

Always a good idea t select an MOT garage that will test 'while you wait' and if there are any problems will show you where and what they are they are. They have a certain amount of time allocated by the MOT authority and Minis don't take long to MOT so they have plenty of time to explain what they found. That's good customer service.

Totally agree with this.

There is a MOT only place that opened near me 3 years ago. I now take both Minis and both normal cars there. Done promptly while you wait, and a completely honest pass or fail with no hidden agenda to create work.

If it does fail they invite me under the car on the ramp, and demonstrate exactly what the problem is. Then you get two weeks to come back for a free re test.

That’s the way MOTs should be.
