Living in tropical Malaysia (where the average temperature is 30 degrees), one would think that this is a no brainer - 75C thermostat.

However, I thought I'd get peoples' opinions on whether an 82C thermostat might be better for me. I have a stock 998 A+, with the standard 11 blade plastic fan. However the radiator I'm running is a side mounted alloy type (looks exactly like the Fletcher one, but isn't so I suspect it's an OEM copy) and also I have an electric auxiliary fan.

Why would I consider a higher temperature thermostat? For efficiency, since if you can run the engine hotter more of the petrol's energy is driving the wheels, rather than going to heat. For as long as I have had the car I've never ever had any overheating problems. If anything I think it takes a bit long for it to get up to operating temperature, though this is probably because my auxiliary fan runs all the time and isn't controlled by a thermal switch (I'm fixing this soon).

In the next 6-12 months I plan to put a stage 1 kit in once I've saved up enough.

Thoughts?

I'd suggest an 82 Thermostat and it's a good all rounder, though with some models, an 88 might be needed for Emissions. Like you, we have hot temps here, summer time can go from high 20's to low 40's, but even outside of that (we had weeks of 48's last year).

Putting a cooler Thermostat in won't lead to cooler running is the radiator is undersize for the ambient temperature. I find a 6 Blade Fan and a 4 Core Copper Radiator well adequate for temps in to the 50's.

Thankfully we've never ever had temperatures touch 40 in living memory (though thanks to overdevelopment and climate change we're not far off), so I don't think a 6 blade fan is necessary.

Ultimately I think the 998 isn't going to put out as much heat as a 1275,

I guess the only difference between the 75 and 82 thermostat is how quickly it opens up to max. If at 82 C my radiator can take away enough heat to prevent the average water temperature exceeding 90C on a hot day while driving on the motorway, then I'll be fine.

I may get some telling off after this, but I don't use a thermostat on my Mini. And yes, I do use a blanking sleeve in place.

Living in Indonesia, where temps are practically the same as Malaysia, and where it is humid and rarely dips below 25 deg, I always turn on the AC in the car, which in effect made the engine running temp higher quickly. If I had used a thermostat, it will be opened fully in about 20 minutes anyway. Without the thermostat, I'm also hoping that the radiator and waterpump can circulate coolant faster around the block as well...

Now, I know this is not best practice, but at least I use the blanking sleeve, right? :D
