Hi Guys,

I'm in Australia and have a UK built Mini 1000 (according to the chassis number) and wanted some input as there aren't many imported mini's here to compare to. I'm not sure how I'm going to get it registered yet as it doesn't have the Aussie compliance plate. Attached are photos of what I've got, the XA2S1 says it's a mini 1000 but the B20S says its a mini city, so I'm confused. I don't know what here is the genuine article and what is dodgy, what I want to know is do these plates look out of place or are they ok? What do you think has gone on ie plates changed or something? Cheers

I think the stamped number in the firewall was done here, and not very well.  Would someone have an example of the Alloy chassis number plate which hasn't has the black part rubbed off?

depending on the age of the car,  you could also check if you have a VIN number stamped in the bottom of the channel at the front (..left of centre..) of the scuttle panel

Your car is from 1972 and for a car of that age the B20S body number doesn't mean a Mini City

Hey guys,

I've searched for a number stamped in the scuttle but to no avail, were they there on all cars or should it be on a '72 model?  would someone have a pic showing where exactly to look (or mark it on my picture)? Perhaps if I knew where I could rub some paint away and look.

The British Motor Museum info search revealed it is March 1972 build according to that Car number plate that's riveted on, I can only assume it's the original plate and it seems to fit with the style of the car. So the B20S and the XA2S1N numbers could in fact be both from this car?

Cheers

you will not find one your car is too old. and if it was it is the same number that is on the alloy plate.

PS it is always good to give all info that is known about the car.

And when I do get it registered what Make am I going to say it is? In Australia, a general rule is that if it's a round nose it's a Morris if it's a square nose (clubman) then it's a Leyland. Being UK built do I call mine a British Leyland, Leyland, or BMC, or Morris? Thanks

1972 it would officially be a British Leyland - Mini 1000 on registration documents, although many were still recorded as BMC/Austin/Morris, etc by Dealers when filling out hand written registration forms, etc......Austin and Morris was dropped from the UK market Mini range with the introduction of the Mk3 in 1969 and 'Mini' became a standalone brand under British Leyland (BLMC). The Mk3 Mini also had small blue/silver BL badges on each 'A' panel in the 1970's.

Part No. CZH657 Silver on Blue (Embossed) stick-on badge was used between 1969 and 1971. It was stuck to both A-panels.
Part No. CZH2717 Blue on Silver (Printed Flat) two pin fixing badge was used between 1972 and 1975. Later it changed to only being fitted on the left side A panel. There is an August 1975 dated BL brochure that shows Mini's with badges on the left and no badges on the right side.....

CZH657     HOUSE BADGE, 'British Leyland', silver on blue     2     1969-71; self-adhesive. Applied to both A panels.
CZH2717     HOUSE BADGE, 'British Leyland', blue on silver     1     1972-75; push fixing.  Applied to passenger's side A panel.
Above from the Somerford parts lists.

Ha, and I'd always assumed that my 1975 BL Mini had only one A-panel badge due to dodgy quality control ... you learn something every day!
