Hi all,

Newbie question : on just about every engine bay pic I see, the water shield is missing. Is there a reason for that, apart from showing more of the engine? Do most of you run your cars with the shield on or off?

Cheers,

Ric

I've just got the little square one on my '72 that screws to the slam panel and fits behind the grille, it was standard on all 70's round nose cars.
Had to cut mine down though to clear the oil cooler.

Mine staggers if anyone mentions rain, but it had the brackets for the shield, so I bought

Works quite well, but in heavy rain I can still get some misfires.

Anyone know what happened to those plastic spray sealants e.g. Holts Dampstart?  Seem to have gone off the market, except in the USA

Well I guess Damp Start was oil based as all plastics are, but so is WD40 and you can get that.

https://www.amazon.c...t/dp/B003IPNBP0

Like here, just not available. And not listed on the Holts web site anymore.  It was a very effective way to help keep things dry

The original Hammerite went due to the solvent used an (yes) new EU regulations.  But still not water based.

I used to use something on the A35 back in the 70s which gave the distributor cap a "dry coating" which in turn was water repellent .. after a few sprays you could peel it off!! My garage then meant that if you put the car away warm, condensation formed over the entire engine .. not great .. except for arcing on the HT system!!

Can't remember what that was called but it worked on my mate's wife's Mini too ..

WD stands for water-dispersant .. how that ended up as a "do-it-all" fluid beats me .. it also has a bad effect on rubber when used a lot!

Reckon that was the Holts Damp Start that I am talking about.  I used it on Minis and other cars in the 70's and later, not sure when it disappeared from the market.  Maybe it's just that modern dizzy-less cars with those big plastic covers don't need it

Has it disappeared? Just because Amazon don't sell it ..

http://www.autoparts...tart-300ml.html

Moderns are less susceptible as the leads tend to be covered .. but they can still get damp through condensation.
