I'm converting my car to turbo, and restoring the body. I'm pretty much sold on the idea of fitting a Safety Devices multi point weld in cage. The two different options on the top door bars are. one is straight, and one is v shaped to allow easier access, so leaning towards that type. I would like a few opinions on the strength of both. I'm also assuming the weld in type is stronger?

A welded cage will be stronger provided its welded correctly to a plated solid shell

There will not be much in it between door bar or the dropped type,

It could be argued the drop type is stronger as it triangulates down to the seat crossmember forward and back

but it could be said the X type door bars pick up the front bars rather than being in the middle of 2 joins. much depends on your seat position.

It will be a 'weekend toy'/trackday car once finished. It was my daily driver for a few years, but currently off the road for a full restoration, engine conversion to 1293 turbo, and many other mods.

then why go to the cost of adding weight when you dont need to and it makes the car impracticable? they are not light.

I dont think there is any difference in cage strength in welded in or bolt in. How ever, both types are much stronger when you pick up on parts of the shell. Weld in cages usually come with a lot of extra bits that you cant add to a bolt, like for example on my bmw, going to the strut tops you cant do bolt in really!

Yeah, I definitely see what your saying. The weight is more of a concern than being practical. I could always try and remove weight from other areas, such as polycarb windows, fibreglass/carbon fibre doors ect. I've noticed Curley do a kit for rear windows with chrome surrounds ect.

just looking at the two cage pics again, the one with the straight door bar higher up is better of the two IMHO, imagine getting T boned in the bottom one by say a sierra, bumper would punch straight threw your door, where with the bar, you have something at bumper height.

My bmw has a X in it , really hard to get in and out of, but then, it could save my life... Minis arnt strong to start off with
