Just fitted a mini spares alloy inlet on my rebuilt 1275 engine . I'm wanting to run my standard air box but can't get it to fit under the scuttle panel. I had to fit a slightly thicker plastic spacer between the carb and manifold to allow the abutment plate to fit. Also I've split the filter box to fit just the bottom half and the servo banjo fouls the under side of the box. So in thinking this inlet is no good for my car so I'm wondering does anyone run this set up ? and what inlet manifold do you use ?

The later air box might fit

Like this one but without the extra holes

Or maybe the answer is a K&N cone.

What inlet manifold have you got fitted ? Is it a standard cooper / mg metro type? Looks to mount the carb lower than the manifold I have . I have got a mg metro manifold might dummy it up and have a look at that .

Want to avoid a cone filter as I don't want the car to be too loud.

Looks like you have a Metro air box which might be thicker than a mini one so worth a measure.

If I remember right the minispares manifold was much better suited to small bore engines as the ports were slightly smaller so if you have a MG manifold that`s the better one to use on a 1275 anyway.

Yep Cooper/metro type. I'll measure the depth of the air box later. I know what you mean about the K&N, I've since reverted to the standard Cooper air box (no holes) and inlet tract.

Just measure the air box, it's 60 mm thick.

Have you tried putting in the lower section only, then sliding the lid in afterward?

Yes and the little tangs around the edge of the top half fouled the bottom half !

Success !

Dummy fitted the mg metro inlet just to compare. Straight away a big difference. The mg manifold let me use a thinner 10mm spacer and seams to sit the carb a touch lower. The spacer for the other manifold was 14mm . I did measure the depth of my air filter box and it's 62 mm

Might go for using this manifold but it needs a little bit of felting . The flanges and mg manifold are thicker and someone has had a rough attempt at filing them down . Need to smarten them up . Also need to blank the vacuum hole take off . Any ideas what to use to do that .

Thanks for everyone's replies .

My clubman estate is very tight to fit the metro type air filter box

1275(last of the carb engines but with HS4 carb instead of HIF38)

Stage one kit with cooper free flow exhaust manifold

It is so tight Ive had to cut part of the vertical skirt from the carb inlet area of the filter box, the dashpot piston has to be unscrewed too, even then its tight

Decided to use the mg manifold . Spent a lot of time carefully filing the manifold flanges to the same thickness as the exhaust manifold. Think I've made quite a smart job of it.

Also had to do a little mod to the carb elbow . Had to shorten the bolt about 5mm to allow the filter box to pass.

Happy it's sorted now just have to choose what needle to run in the carb .

That's turned out well!

As for needle choice you could try your existing needle, I have a BCS needle in a standard 1275 with stage one kit. My 998 has an AAT needle

Sorry to add to this so late on but I had the exact same problem. I ended up going with the older style "round" airbox as opposed to the one with the hose. Not only was it far too tight against the scuttle, but it also fouled on the vacuum bolt for the brake servo.
