Hello all,

I recently completed the build of my engine and took the precaution of fitting an oil pressure gauge. The engine is not run in yet (in fact it's not been anywhere, just run in the Garage) but the pressure is reading 100psi.

Obviously this is far too high but should I fit an adjuster/cut the spring or simply wait and the pressure will reduce as it's run in?

Thanks.

I would not worry as it is a fresh build.

definatly wants reducing, you want to be aiming for 50 psi at anything more than about 3000 rpm on a hot engine.

the main culprit for high oil pressure is the "cooper S ball and spring"  if youve got that try a standard one, if its standard check that the reief shuttle has not marks or burrs. Also what gauge do you have, can you try it with a nother one as they can miss read.

See what it reads when the oil's properly hot after driving for a while.

Thanks all,

I can't take it for a drive but I have had the engine hot and it's still reading 100 psi.

Like Nick suggests, I'll leave it until it's run in.

Thanks.

I'd check the gauge and relief valve as per mini 13, 100's way too much. Even for a new engine, relief valve should be opening to regulate max 60-70.

If your running in your gonna be giving it some stick, so would want to sort that pressure first.

Your engine, your choice though.

Agree with midas, every A series I've ever built with an oil pressure gauge and a standard relief valve hasn't shown over 75psi before the relief valve opens. It may even idle at 75psi hot when freshly built but you can see the needle flick and the pressure drop by a few psi (on a mechanical gauge) when the relief valve opens as the revs increase.
I'd be checking the gauge accuracy and the relief valve operation, you don't want to be blowing oil gallery plugs out.

I would not worry as it is a fresh build.

I'm with Nick on this one, my 1293 shows 100psi at fast idle when starting from cold, has done this for 20 years. After a couple of miles running the idle pressure comes down to about 60psi and once properly hot the oil pressure is about 40psi at idle.

This is using 20W50 oil, with standard oil pressure relief valve thimble and spring.
