Hello I have a Vandenplas 1300 Auto 1974. The box works ok except when in drive it does not seem to change. In drive It drives as if in a high gear only. The car is drivable in drive but no real power. Moving selector from third to drive does make a difference. All other gears work ok. Car has done 56k. Oil is clean. Is this just adjustment. Thanks

It does sound like the shifter cable needs adjusting.

There is a governor linkage between carb throttle linkage and the governor bell crank on the back of the gearbox.

This governs the the speeds at which the box shifts gear.

It needs to be adjusted correctly and you do it by locking the bell crank with a suitably sized drill bit. The size I used escapes me but I'm sure I used the guide in the Haynes to do it.

They are also fussy about having the right level of oil.

Has it got 10/40 oil in? The later ap2 had that specified rather than 20/50 but I'm not sure of the cut over dates.

Here's the correct way to adjust the Shifter. It is a critical adjustment and incorrect adjustment can quickly lead to damage of the gearbox. It is easy enough, just take your time setting it and then check it after a run.

The method for adjusting these early Autos is different from the latter ones.

Only once you have that right, you can also set the Kick-down Adjustment;-

This next diagram, while clear, is hard to find on the car, but is accessible, it's down the back side of the engine / gearbox, just over the diff;-
