I have a 1275 mini with HIF44 carb, stage 5 head, and 286 cam. But i want to get more out of it, i'm looking at going for a 1380 but before i get to committed i would like to hear some opinions about them. My main thought is whether its worth the cost?
This may sound stupid but i have never been in a 1380, heard stories though. So should i go 1380 or stick with the 1275? :-

personally i would go 1330 as you will get another rebuild from the block that way. also im sure the power difference between the two (1330-1380) isnt worth worrying about. thats my pennys worth anyway :-

Plenty of torque with 1380 especialy with that cam.

As for the block thing, they aint that rare yet so its not worth bothering about. Im stocking up for the future though.

Oh and what storries have you heard? Smoking badly by any chance? that may well be down to the build tollerences?

valid point but its not like engine blocks are that thin on the ground or expensive why not go the whole hog (i did) they are good very fast mine pulls really hard to 90mph (on private land haha) i have a 3.44diff and 10 inch wheels so its all about the acceleration! but if your going to get a highish spec a series why not go vauxhall i wish i had for the money i spent (over a grand on a good full engine build) you already seem to have some decent parts i.e. head and cam so that will take away some of the cost....

if you can build the engine yourself and just bore out the block you have you'l get good power from it but i'd recomend you freshen up the gearbox and maybe change the diff pin or new diff (4pin or something) and stick in a fresh clutch plate while its appart

I've got a spare block so thats not a problem, the gearbox is sorted just needs to be picked up. The parts i do have are good espicially that head, only cost me £100 from a place in leicester called neyta engineering. The stories i've heard are just they are fast and pick up really quick, kinda what i want really :ermm:

minisport had 4 pin diffs on offer last time i looked!! mite be worth a look in if you're plannin to go 1380!!

i was in a race (on a "private" A road of course) a 1293, 286 stg3 med built engine in a saloon vs a 1380 286 stg3 oap built engine in a pickup, both had 3.4 diffs and to be honest although the 1380 was faster it wasnt very much so!! the 1380 came on cam sooner 2500rpm rather than 3000rpm for the 1293 and it ticked over a little better. once both in 4th gear if the 1293 got itno the slipstream of the 1380 they were inseperable all the way to 7500rpm!!

A 1330 is 55cc bigger than a 1275.
A 1380 is 50cc bigger than a 1330.

I want first prize for maths.
