The brake lights on my mk1 do not come on.  I pulled off the Green/Purple and Green spade connectors off the brake light switch in the engine bay and put them together and the lights come on, so I guess it must be the switch?

The switch isn't that old, do they fail that easily?  Lots of fluid in braking system and I have a hard pedal.

Anything else I could try?

Checked it is set correctly? it screws up an down , if its not set the pedal wont actuate it

Edit- being mk1 i guess you have a pressure switch not a switch on pedal ignore me.

Guess if your happy to bleed your brakes and work with them, take the switch out, check there is fluid flowing out of the banjo bolt when you press the pedal, just encase you have a blockage. Except that unless you have a means of pressurizing it to whatever point it closes then youll just have to buy another.

Many have found, including myself, that the new switches just don't last too well.

I found the Hella Brand Switch, part no. 4565 lasts very well.

That part number doesn't seem to apply in the UK.

You might need to call in to a Parts Store. They may not have them on the shelf and that price is out of this world ! They are dearer than the types that give troubles, but not that much !  Last one I bought I think I paid around $28 AUD for.

The one you found has a Metric Thread and it may even be a LH thread at that.

The one for the Mini uses a 1/8" NPT thread, though, Hella, being German list it as 3 mm x 27 NPT,,,,,

Maybe give Hella in the UK a bell and ask for a local distributor

Thanks, yeah I figured that was the wrong one, just an example as it looked similar.

To be honest it’s probably more hassle than it’s worth if it’s not coming up with a simple google search, I’ll just get one from Minispares.

When ever I have changed these on other cars I have just removed the switch and fitted a new one without bleeding it, its never been a problem.

Be careful of where you get is from as I bought one off e-bay and it leaked, I thought it was the thread so I kept tightning a it a little bit more until I got to the point that I thought this getting too much and then I looked at it in more detail and the fluid was leaking out around the electrical connectors.

Thanks all.

Looks like Lucas still make one, that’s probably the one to go for

I was just reading an old thread at mini mania and it sound like as these modern switches are so terrible, it would be worthwhile wiring in a later type electric switch on the pedal box, much more reliable!

anyone tried this?

Seems I need this bracket, part no FAM4370, which doesn't seem to be available in the UK at the usual places. I'll probably just make it, but any ideas?

Also I'll need a 'Housing bracket' 31G0842, again seems to be discontinued, item 10 on

If you get a Lucas branded switch, you should be ok.

Brake switches without any packets are cheap copies. There was a bad batch of switches a good few months back, and that is possibly one that Homersimpson copped for

The part number is C16062A

Thanks, but I've decided to convert to the later switch, to avoid any future problems, except as above it seems all the parts (bar the 76 onwards switch) aren't made anymore.
