evening all,

having a slight issue, its an 86  998/stage 3 head,  long story short - car was working fine running etc - parked up for 5-6 months, started up few days back - plugs coked up, took out cleaned - coked up again and backfiring crazy and clouds of black smoke out of exhaust - then it ran out of fuel, i topped it up today and tried to get it going just not having it at all, there was a spark before, i ordered up a few new bits and changed over - electronic dizzy & a new coil pack, there is a strong spark and fuel is there -

i flooded it a bit let it sit for about an hour with the plugs out and tried again, but its just turning over? ive turned the dizzy and adjusted in case the timing was out, but everything was put back in how it was removed.

there is fuel and there is spark, could it still be flooded? last few attempts plugs were fairly dry...

any help much appreciated1

Double check you have a strong spark, sounds like the timing is out. The timing will be different for points to electronic ignition. Was the engine set at TDC before you changed dizzies?

If the plugs are wet give them a dry off with a lighter, preferably getting it hot.

If the plugs are dry, You could try pouring a small quantity of freshly bougjt fuel (from a different station) down the carb throat and see if the motor fires and dies.

I've had it where the new fuel was contaminated with water so the engine just wouldn't run.

Float needle could be stuck open ,flooding the engine. With a change of dizzy the timing could be anywhere. If not getting any kick check the order of the leads.

ah crap.. no engine was not at tdc.. i did remove the caps off both checked the old one where the rotor arm was & fit the new in exactly same position... so woudnt have thought would be that far out,

i have tried adjusting it around but still nothing, will put it at tdc tomorrow and check if its firing on the right cylinder

i marked up the leads before removing, but thing is it wasnt firing even before.. i filled with fresh fuel and cranked it didnt fire, checked the fuel line in case it might have picked some crap from the tank and blocked fuel line, but loads of fuel getting through, checked spark at same time, and was sparking... and this was before i touched the dizzy etc..

I thought that might have been the problem to be honest possible weak spark, it was sitting around since 2003 when i bought it last year, and dizzy cap was in poor condition,

always the simple things - plugs were no good! - i did check spark it was all ok, but i think they have been coked up and cleaned up way too many times so just weren't sparking enough under compression?
