afternoon all,

question, Should the coil pack have a ground...

Reason I ask is that ive fitted an electronic dizzy wired obv live to the coil and negative to the existing spade connection in the loom which i also found essentially connects to the coil pack, ive traced the ground wire assuming its a dodgy earth but it goes behind the dashboard with a rubber boot on it and connects to nothing?...

the car was starting before, but im assuming the spark/coil was grounding out via the plugs on the block, however issue is it runs / idles ok but when revving it bogs down and backfires, so im assuming its because the electronic dizzy has no power?..

Ive set the timing to 8degrees tdc with vacuum disconnected and blocked.

basically the multimeter shows 0v when connected to both posts on the coil? but when i ground the probe on the block it shows 12v, then i tried to run a new wire and earth the coil, and then coil then showed 6v?!

same goes for if i probe the dizzy electric points/ wiring if i earth the block it shows 12v, but when connected with a wire it goes down to 6v..

im kinda baffled, my electrical knowledge is amateur by the way!

I'm an amateur at electrics as well, so take this for what its worth.  I wired my electronic distr (Swiftune) per manufacturer's instructions; red wire from the distr to positive coil terminal, black wire from the distr to the negative terminal on the coil.

ive checked all four plugs, removed 2 & 3 while running makes no difference at all! both 2 & 3 plugs are wet, removed 1 and runs lumpy 4 kills the engine,

4 has a massive spark while 1 has a small one, 2 /3 has spark when cranking but nothing when running...

I have a new coil pack & distributor?!

Any help much appreciated

Have you got the correct coil for the dizzy? Have checked the resistance of the coil? Yes the trigger side of the coil will show 12v as it is earthed by the dizzy to energize the second winding to make a spark.

Also have you done a compression test.

I would be asking the seller if that is the correct coil. As it is one suitable for ballasted ignition.

The dizzy takes its earth from the engine block, positive is taken from the coil + and the other wire which you connect to the white/black wire is the pulse to the coil - which also goes to the dashboard to feed a rev counter if you have one. Voltage measured at the coil will vary depending on engine speed and quality of volt meter, the proper reading to take at a coil is dwell angle. As your engine is running I would think the dizzy and coil are wired correct . I would check the order and condition of the HT leads.
