Afternoon all,

I'm currently in the process of stripping a MG Metro 1275 engine, which I plan to fit into my 82' 998 city.  I've done some reading, and am located close to Rob Walker Engineering (nice) so plan a trip over there shortly once I have decided on next steps.... why?  it's way too slow - want it to be fast road car.

So, at the moment I've split the block and head, head needs a rebuild, bores look OK to me.  So, I plan a rebuild of the short engine and was thinking of the following..

1. Rob Walker to strip and repaint block, rebuild short engine as is with MG Metro cam

2. Head needs some work, so replace with kit from minisport something like this https://www.minispor...hif44-carb.html

As it comes with exhaust, manifold etc...

3. I've just bought a HIF44 SU which I will rebuild.

4. Gearbox as standard looks OK to me.

Build that lot up (this will take me a while as I read the manuals line by line ;)

5. More cash spent on something like this https://www.minispor...ke-hub-kit.html

as I need to convert front drums to discs so it will stop

6. Assuming everything goes to plan rolling road setup and enjoy.

Why post here - well, there's lots of people here with a lot more experience than me and have all got the known gotya's. So wanted to have your thoughts on my plan and any thoughts on kits I am looking to use?

Appreciate it!

A few pointers:

1. Get Rob to do the engine and cylinder head as he will match everything with your cam choice. He will also inspect the block and crank for damage.

2. Don't buy from Minisport, especially their heads. They're renowned to be terrible.

3. Make sure you get a good quality refurb kit for it!

4. Looks can be deceiving. Worth getting it checked over. Rob or Guessworks will be able to do a grand job!

5. See point 2. Minispare do a good kit and you get 7.5% off if you become a paid member on this forum.

6. The most important part, choose carefully who sets it up!

Try the search facility on here .. lots of members have upgraded 1275's and probably used the suppliers you mention .. you might see something that way.

MG Metro cam is similar to the MD266 from Kent which will get you a new one (don't forget new cam followers!)

Roller rockers? You might not need those ..

decide on what water flow set up you want for the heater and have parts modified to suit.

new rad top bracket needed and don't forget the fan spacers.

re the build. I would not bother. get Rob to do it as he will be doing it any way to check everything.

by the above I am talking about the short motor.

head should be sourced and sent with the engine build parts so that they can be "matched"

the main thing talk to Rob. and remember you don't just bolt an engine together and the manuals do not tell you everything.

1.  As above

2.  Consider the final drive ratio.  It makes a big difference to the way the car will drive and feel.   See here:  http://www.retromini...d=19&chapter=20

Thanks for the input - I have the head from the original engine and all parts... sounds like the best option is to put everything into the boot and go see Rob.  Get his thoughts and go from there, he is only 20 minutes away.  I've done lots of searching and there's lots of differing opinions as this is my first build it can be overwhelming as I am learning as I go.  Keep it simple for me  :proud:

I'm just getting to the end of my project to do exactly what you propose - as Gazza22 says, suggest you read other people's blogs to avoid the same mistakes! Definitely at least check the gearbox thoroughly - fairly straightforward to re-build and I think the complete kit is @ £250 to do it yourself. Top tip for an engine build - put aside way more money than you think it's going to cost! As the saying goes 'don't spoil the ship for a ha'peth of tar!
