HI all,

I have recently rebuilt my 998 complete with 12G295 head and SW5-07 cam and replaced the distributor with a Minispares Electric Evo up to 276 cam profile distributor (C-27H7701). It is all timed statically, fires up with no issues, and runs perfectly.

My question is, when i am dialing in the advance, i noticed that turning the dizzy anti-clockwise raises the RMPs and clockwise decreases them. From my old setup and everything online, it seems this is opposite to standard. I don't think this should affect anything, but just curious as to why this changed. It was statically timed to Cyl #1 with dizzy rotor pointing to around 2' o'clock position. I assume if something was 180 degrees out of sync, something else should indicate this. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it were 180 degrees out of sync, it wouldn't be running (unless your wires were rotated 180 degrees to match.) It's impossible for the rotation of the distributor to have reversed, unless you have a backwards relationship between your intake and exhaust cam lobes and your starter motor turns in reverse.

Can you check the timing with a strobe light?

Normally advancing the timing increases engine speed but only up to a point.  Eventually it will decrease again when the timing becomes very advanced, you may be at this point.

Thanks. Popped the timing light on last night. Was way out of time (almost around 20 degrees). Have it dialed in and now turning dizzy is doing what it should (i.e. clockwise giving advance)
